Job purpose
The Pharmacy Dispenser will support the safe, accurate and efficient dispensing of medicines under the supervision of the responsible pharmacy professional. The role also involves maintaining medication stocks and records, identifying prescription concerns and providing professional assistance to patients.
Key responsibilities
Prescription processing and dispensing
- Receive and process prescriptions according to approved procedures.
- Select, prepare, package and label medicines accurately.
- Verify medicine and prescription details before dispensing.
- Identify discrepancies or potential medication concerns.
- Refer identified concerns to the responsible pharmacist.
- Work within the approved scope of the dispenser role.
Patient support
- Provide patients with clear instructions on medicine use.
- Respond courteously to patient questions within the role’s scope.
- Refer clinical or complex medication questions appropriately.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Provide professional and respectful customer service.
Stock and record management
- Maintain complete dispensing and inventory records.
- Monitor medicine stock levels and expiry dates.
- Confirm that medicines are stored under appropriate conditions.
- Support regular stock counts and replenishment.
- Help minimise medicine wastage and prevent stock-outs.
- Maintain an orderly and clean pharmacy environment.
Compliance and safety
- Follow applicable pharmacy and healthcare procedures.
- Comply with relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accuracy, integrity and accountability when handling medicines.
- Promptly report identified prescription or stock concerns.
Qualifications and skills
- A relevant pharmacy-dispensing qualification from a recognised institution.
- Appropriate professional registration or licensing where required.
- Previous pharmacy experience will be an advantage.
- Good numerical and record-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and dispensing accuracy.
- Good communication and customer-service skills.
- A high level of integrity and confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively under appropriate professional supervision.
