Job purpose

Key responsibilities

  • Collect, receive, label and prepare specimens for analysis.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests within the authorised scope of practice.
  • Prepare reagents and other laboratory materials when required.
  • Operate laboratory equipment correctly and safely.
  • Record test results completely and accurately.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and promptly report identified faults.
  • Follow established quality-control procedures.
  • Monitor stocks of reagents, supplies and consumables.
  • Support timely replenishment of essential laboratory materials.
  • Dispose of specimens and laboratory waste safely.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised laboratory environment.
  • Follow infection-prevention, biosafety and occupational-safety procedures.
  • Protect the confidentiality of patient information and laboratory results.

Qualifications and skills

  • A relevant qualification in Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Valid professional registration and licence where applicable.
  • Previous experience in a medical laboratory will be an advantage.
  • Good practical laboratory and equipment-management skills.
  • Strong organisation and record-management abilities.
  • A high level of accuracy, integrity and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of quality control, infection prevention and biosafety.
  • Ability to work effectively with other laboratory and healthcare professionals.
