How to Write a Graduate CV Without Work Experience

A graduate CV can be persuasive without a long employment history. The aim is to convert education, projects, internships, volunteering and campus responsibilities into evidence of skills relevant to the vacancy.

Lead with a focused profile

Write three or four lines naming your qualification, strongest relevant skills and target role. Replace vague claims such as ‘hardworking and self-motivated’ with evidence: data collection, customer support, report writing, laboratory practice, coding, bookkeeping or community mobilisation.

Make education useful

List your qualification, institution and completion date. Add selected modules, a dissertation or practical project only when it supports the vacancy. For example, a public-health graduate applying for research work can mention questionnaire design, epidemiology, data analysis and research ethics.

Treat practical experience seriously

Internships, industrial training, volunteering, student leadership and supervised fieldwork can demonstrate professional behaviour. For each experience, state what you did, the tools used and the result. ‘Entered survey responses’ is weaker than ‘Checked and entered daily survey responses in KoboToolbox and flagged incomplete records to the supervisor.’

Include a small project section

A project can show initiative when it produced something reviewable: an Excel dashboard, research report, communications plan, software prototype, business budget or community activity. Explain the problem, your role and the output. Add a link only if it is safe, accessible and professional.

Select relevant skills

  • Software you can actually use
  • Languages and level of proficiency
  • Research or field methods
  • Writing and presentation experience
  • Driving or riding licences where relevant
  • Professional or safeguarding training

Keep the document disciplined

One to two pages is often enough for a new graduate, although the employer’s format takes priority. Remove primary-school history if higher qualifications already show your education clearly. Check that referees have agreed to be contacted before listing them.
