How to Explain an Employment Gap

A gap in employment does not automatically disqualify you. Recruiters mainly need a clear, truthful explanation and confidence that you are ready for the position now.

Be accurate and brief

Use correct month-and-year dates on your CV. If asked, state the reason without creating an elaborate defence. A simple explanation—such as further study, family care, health recovery, job search, relocation or a completed contract—is usually stronger than an invented job.

Show constructive activity

Mention relevant courses, freelance assignments, volunteering, farming, family-business support, professional reading or portfolio work completed during the period. Do not exaggerate occasional activity into formal employment. Describe it honestly and explain the skills maintained or developed.

Sample response

‘My previous contract ended in December 2025. During the following months I supported record keeping for a family business, completed an advanced Excel course and applied selectively for finance roles. I am now available full-time and the reporting responsibilities in this position match the skills I have continued to practise.’

When the gap involved a difficult experience

You do not need to disclose every private medical or family detail. Give enough information to answer the professional concern, then move to your readiness and evidence. If you were dismissed, avoid blaming people; state the relevant lesson and the concrete change you made.

Do not hide the gap with false dates

Recruiters may verify employment. False dates can create a larger integrity problem than the gap itself. A functional CV can highlight skills, but it should still present an honest timeline.

Prepare supporting evidence

  • Certificates for relevant completed training
  • A portfolio or work sample
  • A referee who can confirm volunteer or project work
  • A concise explanation consistent across the CV, application form and interview
  • A clear statement of current availability
