How to Answer ‘Tell Us About Yourself’ in a Job Interview

This opening question is not an invitation to narrate your entire life. A good answer gives the panel a short professional story that connects your background, relevant evidence and interest in the vacancy.

Use present, past and future

Start with who you are professionally now. Add one or two relevant experiences from the past. Finish with why this role is a logical next step. Aim for roughly one to two minutes unless the panel asks for more detail.

Example for an early-career applicant

‘I am a recent Bachelor of Commerce graduate with practical experience supporting stock records during a three-month internship. I used Excel to update weekly movement reports and worked with the stores team to resolve missing entries. I am interested in this inventory assistant role because it combines accurate record keeping, teamwork and the opportunity to grow in warehouse operations.’

Example for an experienced applicant

‘I am a customer-service professional with four years of experience in branch and telephone support. In my current role I handle account enquiries, document recurring complaints and work with operations colleagues to resolve them. I am now seeking a role where I can use that experience to improve service standards across a larger client portfolio.’

Choose evidence that fits

Mention qualifications only when they matter to the role. Select a skill, achievement or responsibility that answers the employer’s need. Avoid listing every school attended, family details or hobbies unless they add relevant evidence.

Avoid weak endings

Do not finish with ‘That is all’ or ‘I just need any job.’ End with a positive connection to the vacancy. Enthusiasm is useful when it is supported by understanding of the work.

Prepare without sounding memorised

  • Write three key points, not a full script.
  • Practise aloud and time yourself.
  • Record one attempt and remove repetition.
  • Adapt the answer for each employer.
  • Keep every claim consistent with your CV.
