Competency-based questions ask for evidence from your past behaviour. They often begin with ‘Tell us about a time when…’ or ‘Give an example of…’. The panel is looking for a specific situation, your personal contribution and a credible result.
Identify likely competencies
Study the duties and person specification. A field role may test teamwork, integrity, community engagement and problem solving. A finance role may test accuracy, confidentiality and deadline management. Prepare examples that match the vacancy instead of memorising unrelated speeches.
Use the STAR structure
- Situation: Give the brief context.
- Task: Explain what had to be achieved and your responsibility.
- Action: Describe the steps you personally took.
- Result: State what changed, what you learned and any measurable outcome.
Build an evidence bank
Prepare six to eight examples from employment, internship, volunteering, university projects or community leadership. Useful themes include resolving conflict, correcting an error, improving a process, serving a difficult client, meeting a tight deadline and acting ethically under pressure.
Example outline
For teamwork, you might describe a field exercise where attendance records were incomplete. Explain how you divided verification tasks, contacted missing participants, checked the revised list and submitted the report on time. The value lies in the concrete actions, not in saying ‘I am a team player.’
Practise follow-up questions
Panels may ask what you would do differently, how you measured success or who else was involved. Keep your example truthful and distinguish your contribution from the team’s work. If the result was imperfect, explain what you learned and how you later improved.
On the interview day
- Carry the documents requested in the invitation.
- Arrive early enough for security and registration.
- Listen to the full question before answering.
- Ask for clarification when a question is ambiguous.
- Keep answers structured and relevant.
- Do not reveal confidential information from a previous employer.
