The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is inviting applications from 50 informal sector workers and experienced apprentices for short-term skills upgrading under the National Apprenticeship Programme. The opportunity targets young artisans who gained practical skills through informal apprenticeships, work experience, self-employment or other non-formal learning. Participants will have their abilities assessed against approved occupational standards and may receive targeted training and nationally recognised certification through the Recognition of Prior Learning process.
Who should apply?
This opportunity may be suitable for applicants who:
- Are artisans, informal sector workers or experienced apprentices.
- Are between 16 and 35 years of age.
- Have at least one year of practical experience in the selected occupation.
- Acquired their skills through work, self-employment or informal training.
- Want their existing competencies formally assessed and recognised.
- Are willing to complete additional skills training where gaps are identified.
Women, persons with disabilities and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning, commonly known as RPL, is a process through which skills gained outside the formal education system are assessed against approved occupational standards. It gives experienced workers an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do, identify missing competencies and, where applicable, obtain formal certification.

- Receive formal recognition for skills acquired outside formal education.
- Identify competency gaps that require further development.
- Undertake targeted short-term training to address identified gaps.
- Participate in competency assessment through the approved TVET system.

- Improve their productivity, employability and self-employment prospects.

Eligibility requirements
Applicants must:
- Be between 16 and 35 years of age.
- Possess practical skills acquired through informal or non-formal learning.
- Have at least one year of experience in the occupation selected.
- Be willing to participate in the Recognition of Prior Learning assessment.
- Commit to completing competency-gap training where required.
