Many applications fail before the interview because they do not demonstrate the minimum requirements or do not follow the submission instructions. Improving these controllable details can raise the quality of every application.
You do not meet a mandatory requirement
A required qualification, licence, language or number of years is different from a preferred one. Read carefully. If you do not meet an essential condition, focus effort on roles that genuinely match rather than hiding the gap.
The CV is not tailored
A generic CV can contain good experience but make the recruiter search for it. Put the most relevant evidence early, use accurate wording that reflects the advert and remove details that distract from the role.
Claims lack evidence
Lists of ‘leadership, communication and teamwork’ are weak without examples. Show the setting, action, tools and result. Do not invent numbers; truthful scope and outcomes are enough.
Instructions were missed
- Wrong email subject or missing reference number
- Separate files when one PDF was required
- Missing transcript, licence or application form
- Application sent to the wrong address
- Unreadable scans
- Submission after the closing time
- Failure to select a duty station where requested
The application contains contradictions
Different dates, titles or qualifications across the CV, form and online profile create doubt. Keep a master record of education and employment dates and update all documents from that source.
Presentation undermines credibility
Spelling errors in an employer’s name, casual email addresses, copied objectives and cluttered formatting suggest poor care. Clear writing is particularly important for roles involving reports, clients or records.
Competition and internal constraints
A strong candidate may still not be shortlisted because another applicant fits more closely, funding changes or the employer pauses recruitment. Review what you can improve, keep records of applications and continue applying selectively. Never pay someone who claims to reverse a rejection.
