Makerere University School of Public Health is seeking eight Qualitative Research Assistants to support the Scaling the Optimal Use of Multiple ACTs to Prevent Antimalarial Drug Resistance (STOP-AMDR) Project, implemented in collaboration with Jhpiego. The successful candidates will conduct and process interviews involving community, health-system and national-level stakeholders in support of research on Multiple First-line Therapies for malaria treatment in Uganda.
This opportunity is best suited to graduates who have practical experience conducting qualitative interviews, preparing accurate transcripts and translating local-language interviews into English. Applicants must be proficient in English and either Luganda or Lusamia and should be willing to reside in their assigned study district throughout the data-collection period.
About the Project
The STOP-AMDR Project will gather qualitative information from stakeholders in Buikwe and Busia districts and at the national level. The research will help inform the introduction and expansion of Multiple First-line Therapies in Uganda as part of efforts to prevent antimalarial drug resistance.
Who Should Apply?

Key Responsibilities
The selected Research Assistants will:
- Attend study training, orientation and pretesting activities.
- Support entry into communities, health facilities and workplaces selected for the study.
- Conduct and record qualitative and key-informant interviews according to the approved study protocol.
- Explain the research to participants and administer the informed-consent process.
- Respond appropriately to participants’ questions about the study.
- Participate in team debriefings and data-quality-control activities.
- Handle recordings, transcripts and other study information securely.
- Transcribe recorded interviews accurately and verbatim in English.
- Translate interviews conducted in a local language into English without changing their intended meaning.
- Support transcript coding using the study’s agreed codebook.
- Assist with the analysis of qualitative information where required.
- Undertake other research duties assigned by the Field Supervisor, Project Coordinator or investigators.
Qualifications and Skills
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Proficiency in either Luganda or Lusamia, depending on the preferred duty station.
- Previous experience conducting qualitative research interviews.
- Demonstrable experience transcribing qualitative interviews.
- Ability to translate interviews from a local language into English while retaining their meaning.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to complete assignments within strict deadlines.
- A valid Human Subjects Protection certificate.
Added Advantages
- Experience coding transcripts using computer-assisted qualitative data-analysis software.
- Previous research or data-collection experience in the selected district or surrounding region.
